On behalf of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), I am honoured to address you on the occasion of the 2025 International Youth Day Celebration. This annual observance is a reminder of the irreplaceable role that young people play in shaping the future of our nation and our world.
International Youth Day is more than a commemoration — it is a call to action. It invites us to reflect on the state of youth development, renew our commitment to policies and programmes that empower young people, and create spaces where their voices are not only heard but acted upon.
This year’s theme, “Local Youth Actions for the SDGS and Beyond“ is timely and compelling. It speaks to the challenges and opportunities facing youth in an era defined by rapid technological change, climate concerns, global economic shifts, and evolving social realities. Nigerian youths are not mere spectators in this changing landscape; we are innovators, creators, problem-solvers, and change agents.
Across our nation, young Nigerians are driving advances in agriculture, technology, creative industries, governance, sports, and social enterprise. They are proving daily that with the right support, they can lead transformative change. Yet, for their potential to be fully realised, they must be equipped with quality education, decent work opportunities, robust healthcare, and platforms for political participation.
As the umbrella body for all youth organisations in Nigeria, the NYCN reiterates its commitment to championing the rights, welfare, and development of Nigerian youths, both at home and in the diaspora. We will continue to advocate for inclusion in governance, economic empowerment, digital literacy, climate action, and peace building.
To my fellow youths, I say: the future we dream of will not be handed to us—we must build it. Let us rise above division, embrace innovation, uphold integrity, and work together for the progress of our beloved country.
On this International Youth Day, let us commit to partnerships that transcend boundaries, to solutions that are sustainable, and to leadership that is visionary. The youth of Nigeria will not be left behind; we will be at the forefront.
Long live the Nigerian youth.
Long live the National Youth Council of Nigeria.
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Thank you, and God bless you all.
Amb. Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo
President, National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN)
