The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Osun State Chapter, ably led by the State Chairman, Comrade Akinbode Olakolupo Oluwasegun, actively participated in the 2025 Annual National Youth Congress held today, Sunday, June 15, at Hotel De Telavee, Iwofe Road, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Comrade Akinbode, alongside members of the Osun State executive, joined other youth leaders from across the federation at the important gathering that recorded remarkable milestones in the development and restructuring of the Council’s constitution and operational framework. Notably, Comrade Akinbode led the opening prayer at the Congress, setting the tone for a spirited and purposeful engagement. He also *seconded the motion* moved by the Plateau State delegation to adjourn the Congress till a later date to be communicated.
During the plenary session, the National Executive Council (NEC) of NYCN presented its report, confirming that 198 affiliated youth organizations have been duly verified and authenticated. One of the key highlights of the Congress was the review and adoption of the amended 2018 NYCN Constitution, which now makes bold provisions for inclusiveness and improved representation.
Key amendments adopted include:
1. Mandatory gender representation at all levels of leadership to ensure female inclusion.
2. Provision for persons with disabilities to be represented at the National, State, and Local Government levels.
3. Expansion of the State Executive Council (NEC) membership to 25.
4. Increase in the number of National Executive members to 43 with the inclusion of 5 diaspora
5. Local Government Areas under NYCN administration expanded to 15.
The NYCN National President, Amb. Sokubo Saraigbe Sukubo, in his address, expressed appreciation to all participants, commending the spirit of unity and patriotism that defined the Congress. He reiterated his commitment to inclusive governance and promised that at the next Congress, two female Chairmen will emerge from the national structure, and persons with disabilities will have dedicated positions within his administration.
He also urged Nigerian youths not to be discouraged by criticisms or misleading narratives, assuring them of his continuous commitment to youth development and national progress.
Comrade Akinbode Olakolupo Oluwasegun commended the outcome of the Congress, describing it as "a bold step towards a more inclusive, structured and dynamic youth representation in Nigeria." He further reaffirmed Osun State Chapter’s dedication to the goals and vision of the Council.
